Viking

Equality – violence and an extended history

After Ragnar Lothbrok’s journey, the Vikings take a fascinating and often brutal look at the lives of the first horsemen in history.

Full of dramatic tension and (for the most part) concerned with historical accuracy, Vikings achieves a great mixture of fact and fiction. This creates a methodical and interesting journey through the lives of the notorious warriors of the North.

If the last few seasons take a few liberties with this realism and the plot degenerates for the last season, there is still something to celebrate.

Last Kingdom

Agreements – Violence and politics

Set during the Viking invasions of Britain, The Last Kingdom is a well-written series of brutal realism that draws on the charisma of its many characters to lead the story of Uhtred Ragnarson.

The period is perfectly captured in the atmosphere and the scenography. As if that wasn’t enough, this story is told through 4 epic seasons of Britain’s rich history.

With Season 5 already over, this is one of the best options to look at when you’re done with the Barbarians.

Medicis

Agreements – Guideline

In the heart of Florence at the beginning of the 15th century. Established for centuries, the Medici: Masters of Florence is a beautifully shot and fascinating historical spectacle. Spread over three seasons, this dramatic reenactment of the Medici family begins with the growing conflict between Rinaldo Albizzi and Cosimo.

This conflict lies at the heart of much of the story and is ultimately highlighted in the grand finale of the series. From there, the coming seasons will further develop the history of the Medici family and present an exciting series worth watching.

Three kingdoms

Convergence – Drama and warring states

The Three Kingdoms is nothing less than an epic. This ambitious project adapts Luo Guanzhong’s classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and encompasses all the rivalries, intrigues and wars of the late Eastern Han Dynasty.

If you’re in the mood for something that’s going to take a long time, it’s really worth thinking about. The series is beautifully written and offers a great balance of action, storylines full of character and many twists and turns along the way.

Naval turret

Similarity – Spanish drama

Based on the Spanish novel Mar Cathedral is a very ambitious, impressively shot period drama with a great cinematography and a story that slowly unfolds.

The story begins with Bernat Estagnol, a modest farmer who is married to Francesca Esteve. When Lord Bella brazenly shows up for the wedding and asserts his feudal rights to Francesca’s bed, her broken marriage sees a glimmer of happiness nine months later when their first son, Arno, is born.

This is how the foundations and the atmosphere of the show are created, because Bernat is working tirelessly on a future for Arnau after he has freed himself from the clutches of Lord Bella.

Divided into 8 episodes lasting up to about an hour, the characters have plenty of time to grow with credible arches, accompanied by pleasant time jumps and a skillfully written story.

Borgia

Conventions – Guidelines and signs

Borgia is located in the 15th century. The story takes place in the 16th century and places the viewer in the midst of Pope Alexander VI’s struggle with his sons for control of Italy.

Fascinating, intelligent and exuberantly dressed (seriously, the costume design is amazing), this historical drama combines murder, war and tense alliances for a dramatic effect.

The plot is also intriguing and, without spoiling it too much, there are a few tasty twists and turns along the way that make it worth staying long.

Marco Polo

Similarities – Drama and visual effects

Marco Polo’s great cinematography and his sharp eye for visuals make this a very nice series. The immense view of 13th century Mongolia. The 19th century views are breathtaking and give you the feeling that you have been transported back in time.

The story follows the heroic deeds of a Mongolian army led by the ruthless Khan Kublai as he fights for power against the Chinese army. It focuses on the explorer Marco Polo, who became entangled in the court of Kublai Khan and was thus part of the conflict between the Chinese and the Mongols.

The story dances between the two factions, but remains exciting, even if the rhythm is a bit slow now and then. Unfortunately Marco Polo is another victim of Netflix who was cancelled after his second season. Still, it’s a show worth seeing.

Earth columns

Agreements – Periodic drama

Pillars of the Earth is a politically charged series that depicts a turbulent period in English history against a backdrop of war, religious conflict and power struggles.

Based on the book of the same name, the story takes place in 1135 against the background of a period in England known as anarchy. With the death of the king’s only legitimate heir, the monarchy of the country is at stake. Central to a tense political debate is the construction of a cathedral in the city of Kingsbridge, which serves as a catalyst for the drama that follows.

With well written characters and a surprisingly exciting atmosphere, the Pillars of Earth should definitely be on your radar.

Isabel

Similarity – Spanish drama

If you are looking for a similar piece of Spanish contemporary history, Isabel should be at the top of the list. Isabella follows the political ups and downs of the reign of Isabella I of Castile, with a good dose of drama along the way.

This Spanish series, divided into 3 seasons, perfectly captures the essence of the warring kingdoms and mixes it with a biographical account of the life of this fascinating woman. Of course some liberties are taken with real history, but in her search for one of the most turbulent periods in Spanish history, Isabel shoots in front of the stars and strikes pretty hard.

Rome

Comparability – Cinematography and history

It is not for nothing that Rome is considered one of the best historical television series ever produced by HBO. With Gang of Brothers, Rome is an incredible success story on the small screen. The series was originally intended as a mini-series, but was later extended to a visual and fairytale treatment.

The story follows the lives of two men who served in the Roman army, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Polo, in the first century BC. Chr. It is impossible to escape the harsh reality of their profession, and Rome seizes it in all its bloody glory.

And this celebrity is supported by stunning visuals and some of the best production works one would expect from such a historical epic. Rome is an irreplaceable spectacle and remains the ultimate historical drama for every lover, despite the disappointing end after the second season.
