AMD Ryzen platforms have been at the heart of thin game laptops for several years, but this will change with the release of the Ryzen 4000 H platform in 2020.

This time, AMD laptops are able to compete and even outperform their Intel counterparts in terms of performance, features, efficiency and price, so I expect to see a lot of interest in AMD products in the coming months.

As we test several Ryzen H notebooks and work our way through our reviews, this article will detail the mid-range Ryzen 7 4800H and Ryzen 7 4800HS platforms, as well as the mid-range Ryzen 5 4600H/HS options that will power the vast majority of these 2020 notebooks. It also contains a detailed list of all aircraft built on Ryzen 4000 hardware platforms, which have already been announced and launched, and of the aircraft which will be launched in the near future.

Update : There are currently a handful of Ryzen 4000 notebooks for sale. Check this link for updated configurations and prices.

Update2 : Detailed analyses of the Ryzen 7 4800H are available in these two articles: one comparison with the Ryzen range of AMD (Ryzen 5 4600H, Ryzen 7 3750H) and the other comparison with existing Intel Core platforms (i7-9750H, i5-9300H, i9-9880H).

But first a short data sheet for the Raisen 4000 H-line.

All these processors are built on the same 7nm Zen 2 process and have similar characteristics. They differ in the number of cores/wires, the base and turbine frequencies of these cores, and the type of Radeon Vega iGPU embedded. The entire range consists of APUs, with different processors and iGPUs.

The Ryzen 7 4800H is the platform’s workhorse, an extension of the widely used Ryzen 7 3750H and a direct counterpart to Intel’s Core H i7 available in most modern laptops (i7-9750H, i7-10750H). It will be integrated into most of AMD’s inventory management units this year and is likely to offer the best value for money. Budget configurations will also be available with the Ryzen 5 4600H 6C/12T processor.

The Ryzen 7 4800HS/Ryzen 5 4600HS are the most efficient 4800H/4600HS baskets, with a comparable power output, but with a more efficient 35 Watt configuration. These APUs will be found in some high-end ultraportable SKUs such as the Asus Zephyrus G14 and G15 and will cost more than the 45W variant.

In addition, AMD will only offer HS processors to OEMs who agree to work with them on their product design and software to ensure that Ryzen’s HS products deliver the best user experience the platform is capable of.

The Ryzen 5 4600H (and its 35W Ryzen 5 4600HS variant) are 6C/12T variants with lower graphics performance, budget alternatives to Ryzen 7 and 9 builds, and on par with Intel Core i5 H platforms. Most notebooks that offer Ryzen 7 and 9 configurations will also be available with Ryzen 5 hardware as the basic configuration.

Finally, I can’t share our benchmark results with you yet (I will update them in the future), but I will include AMD’s own results for the Ryzen 7 4800H laptop compared to an Intel i7-9750H configuration, both linked to a Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics chip. AMD seems to have a clear advantage in performance testing, but also in most games, the Achilles heel of previous Ryzen laptops. Take them with a pinch of salt and check third-party test results as soon as they are available.
